Online Learning Series

Open Enrollment!

Are you interested in learning to teach online?

The Eighth Floor’s Online Learning Series is just what you need to understand and engage an online community of learners.  Learn about blended learning and online components or just improve what you are already doing by supplementing your in-class activities.  Teaching online provides variety for students and is a must to know in the 21st Century!

Whether you use Blackboard, Desire2learn, Moodle, or Web 2.0 tools, the skills you learn and new perspectives you gain can be applied to any online learning environment.  We will focus on building authentic learning communities, creating successful interaction, and delivering engaging content.

Series Includes Five Short Classes:

1.  Online Experience – Provides a unique opportunity to BE the online student while exploring distance learning theory & practice.  You will be immersed in the virtual learning environment while building a solid knowledge base on such key skills as community building and facilitation.  October 1 - November 14, 2008 (Meets Online)

2.  Creating Courses – Learners will go through the course creation process and learn the basics of organization necessary for successful online learning environments.  Oct. 30, 2008 (8:30-3:30)

3.  Best Practices – An overview of “what works” in online teaching and learning.  We will examine some of the proven best practices   as well as what is emerging in this field.  While    online learning is still relatively new, there are tried and true practices which make learning happen. Nov. 6, 2008 (1:00-4:00pm)

4.  Questioning Techniques – How can you make sure learning happens online and students feel  connected?  This session focuses on asking the right questions to increase student-to-student   and teacher-to-teacher communication. Additionally, we will look at the instructors’ responsibilities as an online facilitator – the perks and the pitfalls.  Nov. 13, 2008 (8:30-3:30)

5.  Project Development: (Optional) – Want to put it all in action?  Set up a time and come to the Eighth Floor to work on your online component or get ahead and set up a full semester class!  We are on call to answer questions, make suggestions, and offer support!
